Publisher, Lucy Owen, talks platforms, soundscapes and virals

Lucy Owen of To Hell With Publishing spoke at September’s LWC LIVE event. To Hell With Publishing is an independent publisher which publishes a literary journal, limited editions and first time writers. The debut novelist imprint began as a way to support new writers. By publishing one novel only by writers, their imprint fills an important gap in the market in a time when bigger publishers are incredibly cautious about taking on new writers. Lucy gave the club some valuable ideas for ways to promote themselves before, during and after publication. She began with literary events – by watching other authors read – even high profile authors – writers can discover exactly what works and what doesn’t. Events give writers a chance to network both with other writers and industry professionals, remembering not to buttonhole and bore editors, try to find out what their taste is and make contacts. At To Hell With The Lighthouse, writers read for five minutes – it’s a lively evening with music too. Check out the Liars’ League – especially if you don’t feel confident about reading out your own work.
