Refresh Retreats – write your next chapter
Refresh Retreats Bali, March & September, 2017
We start each retreat with a story workshop where Jacq dispels doubts such as ‘I’m not a writer. I don’t have a story worth telling. I don’t know where to start.’ and makes it easy for you to look at your life afresh through story. It doesn’t matter why, or what story you want to tell, just that you want help to get started or get on with your story.
The retreat is all about immersing yourself in good living habits. Starting each day with our ‘refresh rituals’: Join a meditation session, first to deeply relax, then meditate, to wash away your usual routine and wake us up and free our minds. New to meditation? Don’t worry; this is your chance to try it free of pressure. Take time to make affirmations, visualise where you want to be in life and read stuff that inspires you and then scribble a little. We will encourage you to start a journal. It may just be one page. All this before breakfast. A great start to each day.
We head out on a stunning jungle trek that gets you out amongst local life and moves every muscle. The afternoon that follows is for treats. Blissful massages, time out to journal, read, nap or just quietly think. A horizontal, restorative yoga session gently energises us before we get hands on in a cooking class.
Over drinks we reflect on our days. Karen Willis tells her story of shifting from the corporate world to living in a Bali village, setting up a retreat business, and surprising herself by writing two books.
We like to put the play back into daily life. We’re ready to cycle the back roads of Bali. It’s a cruisy ride stopping at places of cultural interest along the way and to eat. Not too sure about your bike skills? Don’t worry, you can jump into the support vehicle when you need a break. We’re home in time to chill out before getting horizontal (again) for Jacq’s next story workshop. Lie there quietly taking it in; it’s guidance for your own story.
Over drinks Jacq becomes the storyteller, sharing the ups, downs, and truths working for over 25 years helping authors tell their stories. We celebrate our last night with a candlelit Balinese feast with the Sharing Bali crew.
There is always time to retreat to your private bungalow, to wander, relax, and chat over the dining table in the rice paddies enjoying Balinese style food. And there are massages and facials to keep you feeling good.
We want you to feel refreshed and revived and to Take Your Holiday Home (also the title of Karen’s new book of which you’ll be given a signed copy) so on our final day, an early morning walk takes us through the village where we introduce a walking meditation to our ‘refresh rituals’. We mix it up with an active play session (it involves coconuts!) before returning for breakfast and then wrapping up with a session on how our next life and story chapters are looking and the ONE promise that you take home with you whether that be to do with your writing or other daily habits.
We work in a small private resort in the mountains beyond Ubud. I chose this location for its simple luxury, wonderful hosts and great food but most of all for the peace and quiet, there is no wi-fi!
Writing can be a challenge when life is already full and I know how disheartening it is when another year rolls by and your story is untold. This retreat is for anyone who would like to refresh, relax and try something new and you can do as little or as much writing as you wish. You also have the option of one-to-one time, which is included with Jacq or Karen.
I have advised and mentored people through book writing for over 20 years, I am a Director of London Writers’ Club and have helped with many hundreds of writers at our novel writing events and workshops but it was a personal experience that led these retreats. I knew I had many stories to tell but I just wasn’t writing them, busy as I was helping others, Karen too, had books half developed and needed to get her story in them and the books out there.
Previously I was a commissioning editor with Random House and Harper Collins where I was involved in creating hundreds of bestsellers. I now coach novelists and non-fiction writers around the world from beginners through to published authors. I also founded London Writers’ Club, where I introduce writers to agents.
Bestselling Penguin Random House novelist, Luana Lewis had this to say of her Italian retreat experience with Jacq: ‘… a huge thank you, the writing retreat exceeded my expectations and I feel excited about writing again. I loved the mix of food, culture and writing.’
This is a small group retreats so that we can work intensively together.
The Sharing Bali village offers a taste of paradise, and all food, private accommodation and tuition is included, all for less than the price of a good hotel room.
The 2017 retreat dates and itineraries are here: March 24-27 & September, 7-11.
If you’d like to be part of this unique opportunity to Refresh and to tell your story, contact me now and include your telephone number and skype name and I’ll be in touch.

‘I had never been on a retreat, and had no idea what to expect. Any nerves I had about whether I should be there were quickly dispelled. With Jacq’s expert guidance, my novel took shape. My story was good, but it’s even better now. Everyone was at different stages of writing, and some hadn’t written a word yet, but Jacq helped each of us navigate successfully into bestseller territory. Irrespective of whether you consider yourself a novice, or professional, with the spark or of an idea or you’re redrafting, this retreat is for you. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I plan on making this an annual event!’
Diane Lee, retreated with us in 2015 & 2016 and has self published on Amazon.
