Join us for LWC’s next event on November 19 with agent, Holly Faulks of Greene and Heaton.
Holly Faulks says:
In fiction I read across a variety of genres, though my taste tends towards the literary. My favourite books are those that are intimate in their conception, yet far-reaching in thematic scope.
Some of my favourite novels of the past couple of years have been RESERVOIR 13 by Jon McGregor, FEVER DREAM by Samanta Schweblin, SIGHT by Jessie Greengrass, THE IDIOT by Elif Batuman, SOLAR BONES by Mike McCormack and AMERICA IS NOT THE HEART by Elaine Castillo. I also loved Carmen Maria Machado’s HER BODY & OTHER PARTIES and Daisy Johnson’s FEN.
I would love to find a novel to match Andrew Sean Greer’s LESS and its witty, charming, yet profoundly moving, narrative.
In non-fiction I am looking for stories of unusual lives told in an original way. I haven’t stopped thinking about Tara Westover’s EDUCATED and Jean Hannah Edelstein’s THIS REALLY ISN’T ABOUT YOU. I’m also interested in memoirs that focus on careers and expertise, such as Henry Marsh’s DO NO HARM or THE SECRET BARRISTER.
In all genres I’m keen to hear from under-represented voices and to champion stories that may have been overlooked.
Most of all I’m looking for fantastic writing and I’d like to hear from you if you’re writing about current affairs, science, language, lifestyle or travel. I’d particularly love to see fresh, funny, smart perspectives on feminism and popular culture.
If you’re a journalist with an interesting story to tell do get in touch even if you haven’t quite worked out how it might become a book. Equally I’d be happy to hear from you if you have an idea that could become something more than a book. I work a lot on the speaking and presenting side of the agency too, so I’m always interested in working out how a story might be taken beyond the written word.
